My mom got us tickets to see Chicago in NYC on May 24th! Best birthday present ever :)

Also, I'm getting my braces off on May 9th and then getting new front teeth the following week.

The Stimulus Is In The Mail

Go here to calculate your economic-stimulus rebate check: http://www.irs.gov/app/espc/start.do

It says I'm getting $600. I don't agree with Bush's plan to increase the defecit by randomly throwing around money, but now I want my cash! According to this article, my check will be mailed the second week of May. For some reason the mail works slower for the federal government, so I guess that means it will arrive in June.

Heroes Happen Here

On Thursday I attended the "Heroes Happen Here" Microsoft launch event for Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008. I got some good swag. This was my view:

I lost 9 pounds!

Today was the final day of an 8 week weight loss competition which I both organized and participated in at work. This event was a fundraiser for my Relay For Life team, JPL United. At the start of the competition, each participant gathered sponsorship pledges per pound. A $50 prize will be awarded to the person who brings in the most sponsorship money and a $50 prize will also be awarded to the person who loses the highest percentage of body weight.

What I accomplished:
I had 16 sponsors and pledges totaling $33.50 per pound. After losing 9 pounds, that means I raised just over $300! Also, I went from being in the "overweight" BMI category to being at a "healthy" weight.

How I did it:
The thrill of a competition and the accountability of having sponsors are what helped motivate me to stay focused for the past two months. I lost the weight by eating less, though I did continue my regular exercise plan of about 30 minutes of cardio 2 or 3 times a week. For the first month of the competition, I tried something different every week so that I wouldn't get bored or frustrated. Week 1: counted calories. Week 2: stopped eating when full. Week 3: went to the gym every morning. Week 4: Ate only fresh food that I prepared. After that, I tried combining 2 or 3 techniques at a time. Overall, I tried to avoid sugary foods as much as I could.

I learned that...

  • I can go to the gym in the morning and not be late for work.
  • I really like eating fresh food.
  • I love steamed vegetables.
  • it's not that hard to make a delicious steak if I don't buy the cheap meat.
  • cutting out sugary foods like candy, cakes and cookies makes a significant difference.
  • I should buy fresh produce without worrying about it spoiling before I'll use it because now I know I'll eat it.

My Sponsors (I came up with the categories )

  • Gold Sponsors (Over $25)
    1. Mom
    2. Aunt Linda
    3. Aunt Barbie
  • Silver Sponsors (Over $10)
    1. Brad L.
    2. Bill B.
  • Bronze Sponsors
    1. Michael H.
    2. Bob W.
    3. Dan L.
    4. Stacey G.
    5. Colby Z.
    6. Sovanna M.
    7. Misty S.
    8. Diana L.
    9. Steve C.
    10. Tim W.
    11. Josh B.

What I did yesterday

Yesterday I bought a bag of lugnuts. I had to do this because all of my tires have wheel locks, and once upon a time someone ruined the key. Now the wheel locks don't come off which means the tires can't be rotated. Since I don't live in the hood, I opted to replace the wheel locks with regular lugnuts. Next time I go for an oil change, I have to ask them to break off the old locks somehow. My bag of lugnuts cost $35.

Rice Krispie Heart!

I made this for Brad because we're having a bake sale at work next week and I think I'm going to sell these Heart Krispies, but I wanted to practice it first. Cute?

Super Fat Tuesday

Today is both Mardi Gras and Super Tuesday, but Google doesn't have a cute logo to represent either event.

Sake Bombs and Flooded Basement

Friday night I came home from work and found 6 inches of water in the basement. It was gushing out of the water heater, which is busted according to the plumber. It can't be replaced until Monday, so we've been living without hot water all weekend. I didn't want to stay home Friday so I went to Tokyo Diner with Angie and Casey and a bunch of their friends. I had my first sake bomb. Then we went to Emersons for karaoke but there was no karaoke so we ended up at the Hop. It was so lame, it was awesome. I saw a couple underage girls dressed like whores trying to get in without ID.

Senator Clinton Takes NH Primary!

I'm so ready for this country to pop its female leadership cherry. Even if we didn't have Hillary, and the Republicans allowed themselves a female candidate (as if), I'd be tempted to vote for her just because I think it's time. Why do so many Americans assume that only old white males are electable?

Luckily, Senator Clinton is not a Republican and she views the issues pretty much the same way I do. Read her platform summary here http://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/ but don't try to debate me on it... leave that to the candidates.

My Robot

I like having a clean house but since I don't currently have a cleaning person, usually the house is dirty. To kick off the new year, Brad and I spent most of the day cleaning and we used the Roomba that my mom gave us for Christmas. The whole point of the Roomba is that you turn it on then walk away because it's smart enough to clean by itself. It doesn't fall down steps or get stuck in corners. It's smart. But it's also cute, and really fun to watch, so today I spent hours watching it zoom around the house.
